After an escalator accident at a small town mall, young fat Katrina Shaw turns into super model thin Kat, who follows her agent/sugar-daddy/husband and his kitten all the way to Hollywood. Unfortunately, by the time she realizes that looks will only take her so far in a lala land where everyone is hot, her mother has died of cancer and her promiscuous husband is all she has left in the world. While he's busy running around, she becomes obsessed with ideals of youth and beauty, and undergoes enough plastic surgery to land her her first starring role--as "the Kat" at the Circus Circus Casino. Luckily, even beautiful people have a capacity for genius, as it will take more than just Kat's giant heart to break her out of this cage.

Vivacious little Gilberte, known as Frou Frou, is the daughter of M. Brigard, a retired merchant, who has as his companion in a life of gaiety, Comte Paul de Valreas, a much younger man. Both the Count and Henry de Sartorys are in love with Frou Frou, and when De Sartorys asks for the hand of Frou Frou, M. Brigard refers him to Louise, the elder daughter, who is in charge of the household. To Louise, who loves de Sartorys, comes the first anguish of her life, when he confides his love for Frou Frou. However, she confers with her little sister who agrees to marry De Sartorys. Paul also asks for Frou Frou's hand, but Brigard refuses, stating he is too jolly a companion to be trusted as a son-in-law.

A mysterious Being in a near future investigates a world devoid of human life and determines to unravel what led to the elimination of almost all lifeforms by using voice recordings they retrieved from the past – interviews made by filmmaker Susanne Brandstätter with prominent international experts and scientists before the elimination events. Each interview discloses new clues indicating what led to the deterioration of the environment, to the biosphere, to crops and finally to the extinction of humankind. Yet though Hungry’s visuals show a possible and grim future, the interviews deliver a positive argument for action: this vicious cycle can be broken before it’s too late.
